If you've been diamond shopping lately, you've probably noticed the term "lab-grown" showing up more and more. Maybe you're wondering if it's really "the same thing" as a mined diamond, or if it's some kind of downgrade dressed up in nicer packaging.

Here's the short answer: it's not a downgrade. It's the same stone, grown differently.

Let's break down what that actually means.

They're Chemically Identical

A lab-grown diamond isn't a diamond simulant — it's not cubic zirconia, moissanite, or glass. It's made of the exact same material as a mined diamond: pure crystallized carbon, arranged in the same atomic structure.

Gemologists grade lab-grown diamonds using the same 4Cs (Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat) they use for mined stones, because under a microscope, there's no meaningful difference to grade differently. Even professional jewelers using standard equipment can't tell them apart without specialized lab testing.

The only real difference is origin: one formed in the earth over billions of years, the other formed in a controlled lab environment over a few weeks.

How They're Made

Mined diamonds form deep underground, under intense heat and pressure, over an unimaginable amount of time — then get extracted through mining.

Lab-grown diamonds are created by replicating those same natural conditions in a controlled setting, using one of two established methods (HPHT or CVD, if you want the technical terms). Carbon atoms crystallize into a diamond structure, layer by layer, until you get a rough diamond that's then cut and polished exactly like a mined one.

It's less "artificial" and more — nature's process, sped up and moved indoors.

Why It Matters

Cost: Lab-grown diamonds typically cost significantly less than mined diamonds of the same size and quality — because you're skipping the cost of mining, not the cost of quality.

Consistency: Because the growing environment is controlled, lab-grown diamonds tend to have fewer inclusions and more consistent quality across a batch.

Traceability: Every lab-grown diamond can be traced back to exactly how and where it was made — there's no ambiguity about its journey.

What About Resale Value?

This is a fair question, and we'll be straightforward about it: diamonds — lab-grown or mined — are not generally purchased as financial investments. Both types see limited resale value compared to their original purchase price. If you're buying a diamond, buy it because you love it and plan to wear it, not as a store of value.

So, Is a Lab-Grown Diamond "Real"?

Yes. The Federal Trade Commission and major gemological labs (including GIA) classify lab-grown diamonds as real diamonds — full stop. The only required distinction is disclosure of origin, which is exactly what we do on every product page.
